EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Gambia Technical Training Institute was established by an Act of Parliament in 1980 to provide training opportunities for the middle and sub-professional levels of the technical and vocational human resource requirements of the country. It began operation in 1983 with the provision of Craft level programmes in a variety of technical and commercial disciplines with qualifications awarded by City and Guilds of London Institute (CGLI), Royal Society of Arts (RSA) and Pitman Examination Bodies.
GTTI continues to provide the highest level of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the Gambia. Over the years, the institute has expanded its programmes from the original craft to Full Technological Certificate (FTC) and Diplomas; from initial and Further Education Teacher Training to Higher Teacher Training and then the Bachelor’s Degree programme in Community Building and Design (BCBD) in collaboration with Dalhousie University in Canada and the University of the Gambia. The Higher National Diplomas programmes in Engineering, Construction and Computer Science are also offered.
GTTI’s quest in addressing the institute’s shortcomings of staff capacity building continues to be our priority. The number of full time teaching staff currently pursuing higher level training (HND and BSc. and MSc) is a clear testimony of our stance in ensuring that quality education is achieved as enshrined in our mission statement. In order to effectively and efficiently deliver in our higher programmes, GTTI continues to engage part time lecturers with qualifications ranging from BScs to MScs. Though the engagement of these teaching staff is adding pressure to our meager resources, GTTI would continue to put more efforts in training and retraining of its staff for industrial growth and to address the skill gaps of this country.
Considering the inadequate resources at our disposal, GTTI strives for more collaborative initiatives with our local and international partners to realize our objectives in building highly technical staff in order to offer higher level TVET and professional courses.
